I just spoke to Lt. Derek Paul our new crime watch coordiator about the 32 foot Boston Whaler stolen from 219 Camelot. He said it is believed to have been stolen Wednesday night because it was there during the day, but missing Thursday morning. The report does not state if it was on a davit or a lift but he thinks it was a davit because the report says the wires were cut and it was lowered manually.
Detectives are working on the case.
Lt. Paul recently became our new crime watch coordinator. He is working on using the same system that Lt. Alvarez instituted when she led the program. We were getting informed immediately when a crime was committed and sometimes before a crime could be committed because alert Hammer Point residents called the police because of suspicious activity.
Lt. Paul would like to have a crime watch meeting in the near future with Hammer Point residents. In the past we have had them in the winter when more residents are here, but I am open to having it anytime. If you are interested in attending please let me know so I can set something up.

SUBJECT: July’s Monthly crime prevention tips
- July is the month for lobster mini season-please lock your dive/snorkel equipment after use
- Document serial numbers to your equipment or photograph items for identification if stolen- keep photos and documented serial numbers in a safe place
- If boat electronics are not mounted, please remove them at the end of the day and store in a safe location.
- We have had numerous victims of Credit Card Fraud. Carefully review your monthly statement to ensure the charges are correct each billing cycle.
- Report any suspicious activity in your canals or neighborhoods to FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission)305-289-2320 and Monroe County Sheriffs Office
- Please lock your home if gone for ANY period of time
- Lock your vehicle whenever not in use
- Have a neighbor watch your home if you are out of town for any period of time
- “Move Over Law” requires drivers to move over to the second lane if provided or slow down to 20 MPH when passing emergency vehicles. When emergency vehicles are on the side of the road with their overhead lights on. An emergency vehicle could be police, fire/rescue, and ambulance or tow trucks. Failure to do so could result in a citation of $166.00.
Please remember we have the Sheriffs Office drug drop off program. You can drop off unwanted prescription medication (no needles) at any Sheriffs Office substations across the county. We will be glad to pick up such items.
Please call if you see or hear something suspicious in your neighborhood. It does not matter what time of day or night officers will respond. Please don’t wait until morning and find out a neighbor has become a victim.

Dangerous
This container of model engine fuel was left at the exit of Hammer Point. I guess the person that left it did not want to ride home with this dangerous, cancer causing and volatile fuel in their vehicle so they left it for the residents of Hammer Point to cope with.
Were there any models running around Hammer Point last weekend???

What to Grow
Jim Degranut, Valerie Barth and I met with Kim Gabel from the Monroe County Extension Service and some Master Gardeners from UM, to discuss what could be done to the common areas of Hammer Point. It seems like native grass and weeds are the only way to go. Hopefully once the rainy season starts some of these grasses will start to spread to the dug up areas. No final decision has been reached.
By the way, we have not had to pay for lawn service since the sewer work began. Once the grass starts growing we will restart the service.

As of today only 58% of our owners have paid their dues. Please take the time to write a check so that we can maintain the beauty and safety of Hammer Point.
None of our board members or our president get payed a penny, most of our dues goes to the maintenance of the common area and the cost of the street lights.

Crime Watch
Crime Watch MEMBERS: Please Be On The Lookout *****
We are experiencing quite a few suspicious vehicles and persons calls.
Yesterday we had reports of a suspicious vehicles:
Vehicle (1):Black Chevy, possibly an Impala or similar model,
occupied by (3) Black Males.
Yesterday from MM 106 all the way down to approximately the 70 MM numserous vehicles parked at bridges, beach areas, local attractions were targeted with windows smashed out and suspects grabbed what they could quickly and fled the area.
Vehicle (2): Silver Jeep occupied by (2) hispanic males
We do not believe they are linked or related, however we would like to locate and identify if possible.
Already today we have had calls around the 104 mm of a Blue Chevy pickup in a neighborhood.
Also **just so you all are aware, I will be out of the office starting tonight until 04/25/2011.

Huge Yard Sale and Bake Sale
I was wondering if you can help me spread the word on two events this saturday. We are having a large yard sale at my sisters House on 205 aberdeen saturday april 2 and along with that I am hosting a "Share our Strength's Great American Bake Sale" which is a nationwide volunteer campaign with all proceeds of the Bake Sale going towards feeding a child and ending childhood hunger in the USA. I would like the community to be involved if possible so let me know if you need more information and if you can pass this along. Again, its Saturday, April 2, 205 Aberdeen from 7:30am-12:30pm.

Could you please send an email out to residents explaining that when the contractors break a water line they notify the FKAA and they take it from there. It is up to the FKAA to notify the residents of a break . The contractors cannot do it.
The District will be overlaying the streets with and 1 ½” over what is currently there. The County is in charge of water retention and stormwater.

Hammer Point Annual Homeowner’s Meeting Minutes
January 8, 2011

President Burke Cannon called the meeting to order at 10:12 AM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Secretary’s Report: Bob Hoffman made a motion to suspend the formal reading of the minutes of last year’s annual meeting. Alice Morrison seconded the motion and unanimous approval was received. Sue Woltanski gave a brief review of last year’s meeting.
Valerie Barth gave the Treasurer’s Report. Total income for 2010 was $11,661.44. Total operating expenses were $9557.37. Expenses were for 2010 Annual Meeting, Lawn and common area maintenance, FKEC monthly payment, filing of annual corporate report, membership in Island of KL Fed of Homeowner’s Assoc, distribution of Pelican Press, PO Box rental, “Curb Your Dog” signs, replacement of Entrance Flag and H.P. Dolphin Tournament Contribution. Motion was made to approve the Treasurer’s Report by Carol Hoffman, 2nd by Guy Leakey and unanimously approved.
David Leahy gave the Crime Watch Report. Hammer Point remains a safe community thanks to the presence of our street lights, well maintained yards and common areas and our alert citizens. Most of the crimes reported in Hammer Point in the past year were “crimes of opportunity” (orchids, golf cart batteries, unlocked car break-ins). Neighbors are encouraged to call the sheriff’s office to report any suspicious activity and consider keeping their cars locked. “Curb your Dog” signs have been placed around the neighborhood. By county law, dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after. Several dog bite incidents have been reported. Dogs need to be kept on a leash or in a compliant dog run (even when they are on private property). If you give David Leahy your e-mail address, he can keep you notified of Crime Watch alerts. Denise Green reported that, in mid August, some teenagers driving a golf cart vandalized her mailbox. She has contact information of the responsible party if you had similar mailbox damage in August. It was noted that golf carts without proper certification are illegal on Monroe County streets and homeowners should use extreme caution before allowing children to drive them on our streets.
Airset: Kathy Merlo gave an Airset update. We currently have 157 e-mail addresses that reach approximately 120 properties. Thanks to those who paid their dues in response to the on-line e-mail dues statement. By sending on-line dues statements and newsletters we save money and time for our volunteer board. If you want to download content from Airset you must formally register on the site. Denise Green asked about the possibility of an on-line community billboard. David Leahy suggested his Hammer Point website might be used to advertise Hammer Point Businesses. This will be discussed at the next board meeting.

1. Shoal Markers: Our shoal markers were found to be in violation by Coast Guard Standards and, rather than incur fines, have been removed.
2. As part of a countywide exotic vegetation eradication project, all exotics (primarily Brazilian Pepper) have been removed from our wetlands and the area is now entirely native plants.
3. KL Federation of Homeowner’s worked to limit the impact of the new affordable rental units being built on Burton Drive and to improve the appearance of the proposed expansion of the gas station at the Circle K.
4. Wastewater construction is underway. Questions were asked regarding the repair to water lines and as to whether boil water alerts should be given following water interruptions. Carol Walker will contact the FKAA regarding these questions.
5. Dengue Fever alert in the lower keys. Please limit standing water for mosquitoes by draining boat tarps, emptying birdbaths and flushing bromeliads with fresh water.

Carol extended a thank you to the neighbor in Hammer point from the KLWTD office staff, inspectors and from Redland’s Construction for their cooperation during sewer construction. The main sewage treatment plant in Key Largo has been in operation since July and is currently treating 450,000 gallons a day in a state of the art facility, exceeding the nation’s highest water quality standards. After completion of the project, homeowners are urged to immediately contact the KLWTD if they hear noise from the vacuum pits for greater than 15 seconds or detect any smell from the vacuum pits.
Currently all the trenching has been completed and half of the vacuum pits have been installed. Paving is scheduled for the week after next. Most of the streets in Hammer Point will be completely re-paved (overlay) rather than patched. French drains should be put back and/or repaired. Pavers will be put back into place after the entire project is complete. Once the project has been turned back over to KLWTD from Redland Construction, homeowners can begin to pull permits for final hook up (estimated to be the end of February). You will not be allowed to hook up to your home until you receive the 30-day notice from the KLWTD, after the main vacuum station has been completed near the Circle K (possibly some time in March).
There were several reports of excessively high water bills during the sewer construction project. If you receive an excessively high bill, please bring it to the KLWTD office at MM 98.8 in the median.
